The
Preliminary Assessment report for the Climax Mine site was prepared by URS Consultants, Inc. (URS) in
1993 under the name Climax Molybdenum Company(URS Consultants,Inc.(URS) 1993). A Screening Site
Inspection (SSI) for the CM site was performed by URS in 1994(URS 1994). The field work for this ESI
was conducted on November 11, 12,and 13, 1996.
UOS conducted field activities in accordance with applicable UOS Technical Standard Operating Procedures
(TSOPs),and followed the Climax Field Sampling Plan(FSP)and EPA SI format(URS Operating Services,
Inc.(UOS) 1995;U.S.Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) 1992;EPA 1993). Field activities included
the collection of 45 field samples. Samples
for Total Organic Carbon analyses were delivered via courier to Hydrologic Laboratories of Brighton,
Colorado. Hardness will be calculated from the total metals analyses for samples that require hardness
adjustment for applicable water quality standards.
2.0 OBJECTIVES
The purpose of the ESI is to gather further site information for a risk screening evaluation'of this site using
the EPA's Hazard Ranking System(HRS)criteria. The specific objectives of this ESI are to:
• Characterize water quality upgradient from the CM site at low flow during the autumn or early
winter;
• Identify and delineate target populations and environments along Tenmile Creek from the CM
National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System(NPDES)discharge point to Dillon Reservoir;
75-51119.00
F:\STARTICLIMAX\Final.ARR\CLIMA,`C.TXT.wpd:bas
