Annuals contributed substantially to
cover in both areas, and required an adjustment to total cover in the reference area as
discussed below in Comparison to Standard.
Table 5. Annual grasses and forbs comprised 16.3% (57.4% relative cover)
in the reclaimed area and 14.3% (47.2% relative cover) in the reference area. CDRMS
regulations specify that annuals can be included in reclaimed area total cover up to 10% relative
cover, or up to the amount of relative cover of annuals in the reference area. Because the
relative cover of annuals in the reclaimed area exceeded 10% relative cover and exceeded the
relative cover of annuals in the reference area, it was necessary to adjust the total cover in the
reclaimed area by deleting the excess annuals. The amount of annuals allowed in the
reclaimed area was calculated as 47.2 (the relative cover of annuals in the reference area) x
28.4 (total desirable vegetation cover in the reclaimed area) = 13.4% annual cover allowed in
the reclaimed area. This reduced the total cover of desirable vegetation in the reclaimed area
from 28.4% to 25.5%, and this adjusted total was then compared to Q. Following direction from
15
