Limited - Results Cultural Resource Survey Form
(page 3 of 3)
V. LITERATURE REVIEW (continued)
25. Known Cultural Resources
In the project area: None.
In the general region: Site 5DT95 the Morrell Homestead is the nearest site and was originally mapped
76 meters from the edge of the 200 foot -wide corridor inspected for this project. No evidence of this site was
found within the present study or the surrounding area (additionally site 5DT95 is presently being revisited by
GRI with a large block area and will be further addressed in a future report). Also five other cultural resources
have been recorded within approximately one mile of the proposed drill hole location and access road. These
are listed on an attached table Additionally, an overview of the prehistory of the area is provided in a document
published by the Colorado Council of Professional Archaeologists entitled "Colorado Prehistory: A Context
for the Northern Colorado Plateau" (Reed and Metcalf 1999) and an overview for the history of the area
published by the same organization is entitled "Colorado History A Context for Historical Archaeology"
Church et al. 2007).
26. Expected Results: No significant cultural resources were expected because of the low density
of sites recorded by large block surveys in the area and the heavy vegetation cover.
VI. STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
27. The purpose of the study was to identify and record all cultural remains over 50 years old within the areas of
potential impact to assess their significance and eli 'bilb to the National Register of Historic Places (NRIIP).
and make recommendations concerning management. If possible, the remains will add to our understanding
• of the prehistory and history of the region
VII. FIELD METHODS
28. Definitions: Sites were defined as a discrete locus of patterned activity greater than 50 years of age and
consisting of five or more prehistoric artifacts with or without features or over 50 historic artifacts with associated
features Also single isolated hearths with no other associated artifacts or features were to be recorded as a site.
IF Isolated finds were defined as less than five artifacts without associated features. Exceptions to this definition
include historic trash dumps without associated features a single core reduction event with a single core and
associated reduction debitage• a single pot drop where the sherds are from a single vessel; or, a prospector pit
with /or without artifacts and no associated historic structures or features.
29. Describe Survey Method: A 100 percent pedestrian cultural resources survey of the drill hole location was
conducted by a creyv of two archaeologists walking transects spaced 15 meters apart to cover a 10 -acre block area.
The linear routes was inspected by walking parallel transects based on the existing two -track and spaced at l 5m to
cover a 200'(60m) wide corridor. A total of 28.6 linear acres was surveyed. The survey was limited by heavy
vegetation cover and the steep slopes were contoured.
VIII. RESULTS
30. List IFs if applicable.
A. Smithsonian Number: _
Indicate IF locations on the map completed for Part III,
Description:
31. Using your professional knowledge of the region, why are there none or very limited cultural
• remains in the project area? Is there subsurface potential?
The cultural resource potential of this region is limited by extreme slopes and heavy vegetation cover.
Subsurface cultural deposits are not expected and no further work is recommended.
