July 27, 2010 C- 1991- 078/Hamilton Mine MLT
OTHER — CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL
Section 2.04 and Exhibit 2 of the Permit address the cultural and historical aspects of the permit area.
The May 15, 1991 Cultural Resource Inventory Report prepared by Grand River Institute (GRI)
identified two sites, 5MN3761 and 5MN3760, which were evaluated as eligible and potentially eligible,
respectively, for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Site 5MN3760, located on the crest of the hill near the access road between Pond A and Pond B, was
tested, as reported in GRI's addendum dated June 30, 1991, and the Colorado Historical Society
concurred that the site was eligible to the National Register. Further testing and data collection,
conducted through November 1991, resulted in GRI recommending to the CHS that no further work on
the site was necessary.
With 5MN3761, on the other hand, the operator chose to protect the site from all mining- related
disturbance (as described on page 2.04 -3). Documentation contained within the DRMS permit does not
indicate that any testing or data recovery of this site was undertaken.
During the subject inspection of the mine, the Division traversed on foot the general area surrounding
site 5MN3761, and observed some evidence of possible surface disturbance and excavation activity
having occurred at some unknown time in the past (Photo ). The surface lacked the development of
biological soil crust that occurs on undisturbed soils in the area, and a zone approximately 10 feet square
in the center of the disturbance appeared to have settled with respect to the surrounding ground surface,
in what could be due to the excavation and backfill of an exploration pit.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 0
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: I
Page 3 of 7
