Forty - eight years ago, my
parents moved from Oklahoma City to begin their first and only teaching
career right here in Nucla. My family's history not only includes education,
but agriculture, ranching, business proprietorship, and mining. Personally, I
have lived in the West-End of Montrose County for 30 years; was born and
raised here, attended the public school and worked for several proprietors
during my High School years. Upon graduating from High School, I left
home to pursue a career and raise a family. During that time, I was an
employ of Atlantic Richfield's' West Elk Mine and witnessed all aspects of
mining, including the permitting and reclamation processes. I am very
aware of the impact an active mine has on a community and the benefits
realized from all involved. Not only do these benefits affect the employee, it
has a positive and substantial effect on school districts, businesses, county
districts, emergency/ medical, fire districts; just to name a few; not to
mention the morale and pride in the community.
