2. Design of the temporary support of excavation system is the responsibility of the
Contractor
3. Construction of the support of excavation system shall not interfere with the
permanent structure and may begin only after a review by the Owner /Engineer
4. Extend shoring and bracing to a minimum of 5 feet below the bottom of excavation.
Shore excavations that are carried below elevations of adjacent existing foundations
B. Dewatering
1. Divert surface water from or prevent it from entering excavated areas or trenches to
the extent practical without damaging adjacent property
2. Provide and maintain adequate dewatering equipment to remove and dispose of
surface and ground water entering excavations, trenches and other areas of work
3. Trenches shall be dewatered so that the pipe laying may be performed on dry ground
and the foundation for the pipe is not compromised
4. The water shall be kept down until the unit or section under construction is complete
5. Contractor is responsible for all costs associated with dewatering
6. Contractor shall acquire any necessary permits to conduct dewatering operations
C. Blasting
1. It is anticipated that no material will be encountered that will require blasting; but,
should such material be encountered, no blasting will be permitted until proper
precautions are taken for the protection of persons and property Authorization for
blasting must be received from the proper officials prior to any preparations for
blasting
2. The Contractor shall be responsible for all damages incurred as a result of blasting,
and shall repair any damage immediately at his own expense
3. Contractor shalt meet all federal, state, and local requirements
D. Excavation
1. Maintain the open excavated trench preceding the pipe laying operation and unfilled
trench, with pipe in place, to a minimum length which causes the least disturbance and
maintains construction progress
2. Complete excavation work to grade elevations called for on drawings within a
tolerance of + / -0.1'
3. Increase depth of pipe, in order to clear any obstructions encountered at normal pipe
grades
4. Excavate trenches so pipe can be laid straight and on a uniform grade, without dips
and bumps, between elevations on the drawings
5. Insure trench alignment is such that the pipe is accurately laid to the required pipe
alignment and that the pipe is centered within the trench
6. Maintain a minimum of 4.0' of cover over top of pipe
7. Trench widths
a. Excavate the trench to a width that allows for adequate working space and pipe
clearances for proper installation
b. Maximum trench width from bottom of trench up to 12" above pipe shall be the
pipe size plus 24"
c. Minimum trench width from bottom of trench up to 12" above pipe shall be the
pipe size plus 12"
312333 -5
