SECTION 3123 33 <br />TRENCIIING AND 1BACKFILLING <br />PART I — GENERAL <br />1.1 DESCRIPTION <br />A. Scope <br />1. Clearing, stripping and site preparation <br />2. Handling, storage, transportation and disposal of excavated material <br />3. Sheeting, shoring, bracing and protection work <br />4. Pumping and dewatering as required or necessary <br />5. Excavation <br />6. Backfill <br />7. Compaction <br />8. Pipe Embedment <br />9. Finish grading <br />10. Appurtenant work <br />1.2 DEFINITIONS <br />A. Select Excavated Material: Material which is excavated and removed from the ditch with <br />a maximum dimension of no greater than one -half (1/2) inch which contains sands, clayey <br />sands or clayey gravel and does not contain top soil or organic material. Fill sand is an <br />approved select excavated material. <br />B. Approved Backfill: Excavated material which has a maximum dimension of three (3) <br />inches and contains no frozen material, trash, debris, concrete, rock or organic material. <br />Fill sand may be substituted for the excavated material for backfrll. <br />C. Class I Material: Angular, one - fourth (1/4) inch to three - fourths (3/4) inch, graded stone, <br />including a number of fill materials that have regional significance such as coral, slag, <br />cinders, crushed stone, and crushed shells. <br />D. Class H Material: Coarse sands and gravels with a maximum particle size of three - fourths <br />(3/4) inch, including variously graded sands and gravel containing small percentages of <br />fines, generally granular and non - cohesive, either wet or dry. Soil types GW, GP, SW, and <br />SP are included in this class. Some approved examples include fly ash, dolomite <br />screenings, coarse sand, and blow sand. <br />E. Class III Material: Fine sand and clayey gravels, including fine sands, sand -clay mixtures <br />and gravel clay mixtures.
