SECTION 3137 00
RIPRAP
1. Scope
The work shall consist of the construction of rock riprap revetments and blankets, including filter or bedding
where specified.
2. General
Riprap shall be in accordance with this section. Riprap shall be furnished and placed to the prescribed outlines
and thicknesses for the protection of slopes, channels, and structures at the locations shown on the drawings and
elsewhere as directed by the Owner /Engineer. The Contractor shall neatly place in stockpile riprap material at the
locations shown on the drawings. The material in this stockpile shall meet the gradation requirements for riprap
of nominal thickness of 12 inches.
Prior to any Contractor operations in the riprap source, if requested, the Contractor shall submit, to the Engineer
for approval, his plans for developing the source and transporting the materials to the dam site. The plans shall be
in sufficient detail to indicate full compliance with this section. The Contractor shall furnish to the Engineer,
without cost to the Engineer, such samples of rock materials for testing as may be required by the Engineer from
proposed quarry sites and from rock materials delivered to the dam site.
All rock materials not meeting the requirements of these specifications, as determined by testing and /or
inspections at the quarries or at the dam site, will be rejected. All rejected materials shall be disposed of in an
approved manner at the expense of and by the contactor.
3. Material Source
Rock riprap may be obtained from any approved source. Samples of rock from the riprap sources, located as
shown on the drawings, have been tested, and the samples were found to be of suitable quality, and these sources
have been approved. Tests have not been made to determine the relative difficulty of obtaining rock fragments of
the specified sizes. The contractor is cautioned that rock from the above - mentioned sources may be variable in
quality and sizes; that only selected Iocations and strata within the source will produce acceptable rock; and that
the quantity of acceptable rock fragments which may be obtained from the sources is unknown.
The Contractor shall make all arrangements with property owners for right -of -way, and shall pay all costs
including any royalties for firrnishing materials of approved quality and gradation from any other approved
sources. The Owner /Engineer reserves the right to make inspections of quarry sites and quarries. The approval
by the Owner /Engineer of some rock fragments from a particular quarry site shall not be construed as constituting
the approval of all rock fragments taken from the quarry, and the contractor will be held responsible for the
specified quality and gradation of rock fragments delivered to the dam site.
4. Quarry Operations
The Contractor shall acquire any necessary permits required in the quarry operations. The contractor shall also
clear, strip, develop, and operate the quarries; excavate and transport the rock materials; dispose of waste
materials; construct and maintain haul roads; and perform all other operations required to produce acceptable
riprap materials.
313700- 1
