Flora: Ponderosa forest with an understory of dense Gambel oak and various wheat <br />and grama grasses. <br />20. Soils/Geology: Sediment is characterized by a brown sandy clay loam with an <br />abundance of boulder and cobble inclusions consisting of rhyolite, vesicular basalt, <br />basalt chalcedony, chert sandstone and quartzite. The sediments of the project area <br />consist of Pagosa-Lakehelen complex in the southeastern portion and Goldbug-Valto <br />complex in the northwestern portion (NRCS 2010). <br />21. Ground Visibility: 0-50% <br />22. Comments: Thick Gambel oak and -grasses covered the majority of the proiect area. <br />V. LITERATURE REVIEW <br />23. Previous Survey Activity - In the project area: Two cultural resource investigations <br />(Applegarth 1974 and Arrinqton 1981) have been conducted within the vicinity of the <br />project area in connection with energy development and land exchanges. <br />In the general region: Nine additional cultural resource investigations have been <br />conducted in the general region in connection with residential development, energy <br />development transportation land exchanges water resource development, and <br />historic preservation. <br />25. Known Cultural Resources - In the project area: Site 5AA663 was recorded within the <br />southeastern portion of the project area (Arrington 1981). However, the site was not <br />relocated and no identifying information was located on the COMPASS database. The <br />site was recorded in 1979 and possibly no longer exists or was not plotted correctly. <br />In the general region (summarize): Nineteen sites with 22 components have been <br />documented in the general region. Sites consist of historic habitation (27%), <br />prehistoric open lithic (23%) historic camp (9%) historic school/store (9%), <br />prehistoric open camp (9%). historic trash dump (5%), historic water control (5%).
