Dudash
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Bowie Resources, LLC, Bowie No. 2 Mine
Application for a Technical Revision
Ventilation Shaft Construction
Permit C-1996-083
Dear Mr. Dudash:
CIVIL ENGINEERING
CONST. MANAGEMENT
RECEIVED
JUL 0 92010
Division of Reclamation,
A ft*g and Safety
On behalf of Bowie Resources, LLC, (BRL) enclosed is an application for a technical
revision to provide for the construction of a ventilation shaft located east of Terror
Creek. The proposed construction site is on BLM managed land.
Project Narrative
The shaft will be raise bored its entire depth of approximately 550 feet. The shaft is to
be lined with concrete and have a finished diameter of 18.5 feet. A ventilation fan is not
required at this time since pressure from the mine ventilation system will force air out
the shaft. The shaft will be equipped with an escape hoist and nitrogen generator. The
electrical powered compressors needed to run the nitrogen generator will be fed by an
underground power cable. The shaft will be ring grouted to minimize water infiltration.
Grouting will be extensive in the water bearing zones. BRL will need frequent access to
the site to test the escape hoist.
Activities necessary for the successful completion of the shaft include the following:
1. Drill a geotechnical hole to determine the depth of unconsolidated material,
the geologic structure, mechanical properties, and permeability of the
underlying strata. This information will be utilized to determine amount of
pre-grouting required, design the shaft lining and provide contractors
sufficient data to bid the shaft installation.
2. Drill and ring grout perimeter of shaft to seal off water bearing zones.
3. Install concrete shaft collar (30'X 30'X 4' thick). Remains in place to support
concrete cap during reclamation.
4. Drill 18" diameter pilot hole.
5. Raise bore 20-foot diameter shaft. Cuttings conveyed to the surface and
placed in the coal mine waste disposal area.
