Talvitie, P.E.
l
Subject: Trapper Mine - Permit No. C-1981-010
Review of March 2010 Geotechnical Monitoring Report
At your request, I have reviewed the Semi-annual Geotechnical Monitoring Report
(GMR) from Trapper Mining Inc. dated March 31, 2010. This GMR represents a change
in monitoring methods from those historically utilized. Revisions to the Ground Control
Plan were developed in consultation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration
(MSHA), and officially incorporated into the Permit with TR-106.
General Information
Four new monitoring sites were installed in the vicinity of the Oct-2006 landslide in the
fall of 2009. Data from these sites (including inclinometers, piezometers and GPS
stations) is produced continuously and recorded at the Trapper Mine office. The revised
plan will provide TMI with immediate notification of any significant change in
conditions or movement of the landslide.
A description of the monitoring system is found on pages 3-27a and 3-27aa of the Permit.
Table 3.3-4 and Figure 3.3.3-1 provide specific details on the types and locations of
instrumentation installed. According to the last paragraph on 3-27a, three GPS stations
were constructed in the slide zone, and a fourth station was located outside the slide area
to act as a reference and repeater station. Station descriptions at the top of 3-27aa
indicate that Station 2 was not equipped with GPS, implying that it is this station which
lies outside the slide zone. Figure 3.3.3-1, however, seems to indicate that it is Station 3,
not Station 2, which lies outside the slide zone.
Please compare the text on pages 3-27a and 3-27aa with station locations as illustrated
on Figure 3.3.3-1 and revise if necessary.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
