storage and will be re-named pond FW-2. Sediment was being cleaned from MB-1 during the
inspection(see photo).
Ditches next to roads appeared in good repair.
No discharge was occurring at the underground mine water pumping site in Sylvester Gulch(CDPS
outfal1017).
No excessive erosion was evident at the MDW pads inspected: 24HG2E12XC (the"jet hole") and 24-
08 located in the upper part of Sylvester Gulch, and 16-07, 16-06, and 15-06 which are reclaimed sites
located along the West Flat Iron in the E '/2 Section 27.
Support Facilities
No problems were found in the Sylvester Gulch facilities areas, including the vent shaft sites and mine
water treatment ponds. The mine water treatment ponds are fenced. The outslope of the treatment
pond that was constructed last year shows no signs of excessive erosion and is quickly developing
good vegetative cover. The mine operator's diligence in quickly establishing vegetative cover on this
steep slope is commendable.
Construction continues on the coal preparation plant(on the Lower Refuse Pile), associated conveyors,
and the new stack tube ST-5 (see photos). A corridor has been stripped of topsoil on the west outslope
of the Lower Refuse Pile, in advance of construction of elevated product conveyors P3 and P5 that will
extend over the corridor. The stripped topsoil is stored in stockpiles next to the corridor. The topsoil
stockpiles are protected by straw mat.
A steel cover is onsite awaiting installation on the new Refuse Conveyor PP-4 that is under
construction. PP-4 will carry refuse from the preparation plant eastward over Sylvester Gulch Road to
the Refuse Truck Bin on the Refuse Pile Expansion.
Topsoil
Topsoil stockpiles appeared in good shape in Sylvester Gulch and at the MDW sites inspected, with no
signs of excessive erosion and no weed problems.
Revemetation
The operator's summer weed spraying program is in progress. Disturbed areas did not have weed
infestations. Where Canada thistle has developed, it appeared to have recently been sprayed as
indicated by wilted stalks and leaves. Reclaimed drill pads at MDWs 16-07, 16-06, and 15-06 had a
good, diverse vegetative cover, consisting of a mix of grasses and some forbs, with a few woody
shrubs. Disturbed areas in the Lone Pine Gulch area also had well-developed vegetation.
Air Resource Protection
A water truck was spraying for dust control in the construction areas in the Main Surface Facilities
areas. There were no dust problems.
4
