Slopes for edges of the pit will either be 2:1 and will be cut as mining
progresses, or cut vertical and then backfilled with overburden at the planned
extent of the area to be mined, if sufficient overburden is available for immediate
backfill.
Pit floors will slope to the west (towards the creek) and will allow precipitation
to infiltrate into the retained or replaced rooting zone (overburden) material or into
French drains to allow ground flow to the west; no surface discharge or
impoundment (except specified ponds) is planned. In addition to planned and
permitted ponds, ephemeral ponds may exist during mining, based on slopes,
stages of mining, and the need to control and prevent sediment runoff.
That portion of the permitted area immediately on the eastern boundary of
the permit area which is also the western boundary of the Mud Creek Pit (M-2008-
010) will be daylighted to the Mud Creek Pit at the bottom of the aolian deposits.
ROADS:
The existing road constructed during pre-law mining and improved since 1995 will
remain as a permanent feature, as requested by the landowner, although the final
alignment may vary slightly in detail from that shown on maps. This is approximately
1500 feet in length, will be extended to approximately 2500 feet, improved and left
as a two-lane road for access to all portions of the property, including areas both
within and outside the permit boundary. See Exhibit E for more information.
ACCESS: For all purposes (mining and agriculture), access to the pit shall be limited
to the road off County Road H at the south end of the property. This road in turn
provides access to SH-160. This road will be graveled according to County and user
requirements, and may be treated with mag-water or other dust control agents.
PIT ROADS (HAUL): Various other pit roads will be constructed and used in the permit
area for various periods of time. The exact routing of those roads will be identified as
mining proceeds, and are not shown on maps. These roads will normally be on a
mined surface, but may be on the original ground surface (after stripping). All roads
providing access to plant sites will be all-weather, gravel, minimum as required by
County/MSHA standards for mine haulage, mine access, fire and other emergency
purposes; other roads will meet MSHA standards but may be narrower. Roads will
include drainage features (ditches, culverts, berms, check dams, etc.) as required
by proper design and maintenance requirements, storm water and related permits,
safety berms or other devices as required by MSHA, and signage as required by
MSHA and OSHA standards for mining and industrial/commercial purposes.
Existing roads/trails will be used as necessary to provide ranching access to
areas of the property not being mined, as well as access where needed on a
seasonal, short-term basis for preparation, emergency access, reclamation, and
inspection, and are not be shown. No existing trails are considered significant
permanent structures.
MISCELLANEOUS ACTIVITIES:
Plant areas and adjacent areas in which reclamation is delayed may be used
during mining operations to provide space for County-permitted plants, including
portable plants which may or may not be directly related to mining activities, such
Exhibits for 112(c) AM-02 Application -M-1994-108-2010- Page 16
