On behalf of Brannan Sand & Gravel, the following is our request for a Technical Revision to
the permit for Brannan Pit #29 (Pit #29), which is an active 112(c) operation that mines sand and
gravel. -
Background
Pit' #29 is a slurry wall mine that will be used for water storage. The slurry wall was constructed
in-2003 and 2004. Subsequently, a slurry wall was installed at the Stagecoach Pit across Old
Brighton Road from Pit #29 (Figure 1). Following the installation of the slurry wall at the
Stagecoach Pit, homeowners in the vicinity, specifically near Zigan Lake, began experiencing a
rise in ground water levels. As a result, an inspection was performed by DRMS, on February, 5,
2010.. In the inspection report on Pit #29, Brannan was instructed to submit a Technical Revision
for a ground water level monitoring plan.
Proposed Ground- Water Monitoring Plan
Following the construction of the slurry wall' at Pit #29, a leakage test was conducted in 2006 for
the southern cell. Integral to this testing, monitor wells were installed surrounding the south cell.
Three pairs of wells were installed;'one well inside the slurry wall and a twin outside the wall.
The locations of the wells are shown on Figure 1. Also attached are the well completion reports
for the wells outside the slurry wall, MW=I OUT, MW-2 OUT, MW-3 OUT. During the leakage
test water levels were recorded in the monitor wells.
We propose to monitor levels in the three wells outside -of the slurry wall. on a quarterly basis
beginning with the second quart er of 2010. As requested by DRMS, the data for each quarter-
will be submitted by the end of the month that follows the end of the calendar quarter.
