in the shallow areas around the lakes, and the above additional shrubs in the revised seed mix, no
other shrub/tree recommendation is proposed by RPM. United should further research the file
for the Virginia Acres site to verify if the commitment for additional trees and shrubs were
incorporated into the permit. (Willow establishment may help control establishment of
tamarisk.)
The DOW requested in their wildlife statement United plant tall wheatgrass and yellow
sweetclover at rates of 14.5 and 1.0 PLS -lbs/ac respectively.
SPECIES (DOW
recommendation) Precip. The next step is to drill seed into the site. However, broadcast seeding
into a rough surface may improve seed establishment. Many species used in mine site
reclamation are small. If drill seeding depth is not accurately controlled, the seed could be
planted to deep, resulting in partial or total seeding failure. Broadcast seeding into a very rough
surface scatters the seed in a random pattern into nooks and crannies of broken and loose soil.
"Because the seed is deposited on the soil surface and not placed in the soil, some sort of
device is usually dragged over the site after seeding to knock some of the seed into cracks
and crevices in the soil. This may be followed by rollers or cultipackers to press the seed
into the soil for good soil-seed contact. This technique provides variable-depth seeding
so necessary with multiple seeded sites and is the preferred seeding method for small-
seeded species." (Page 122, Practical Handbook of Disturbed Land Revegetation, F.F.
Munshower, 1993)
4.2 Recommended Soil Amendments:
The soils analyses for two of the sites indicates a deficiency of organic matter, but adequate
amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium are available.
