• IMPROVED PASTURE REFERENCE AREA / CRP LANDS
(Photographs 57 -58)
Cover
(Table 15)
Introduced perennial cool season grasses was the predominant lifeform observed in the Improved
Pasture Reference Area — Upland / Conservation Reserve Program Lands, contributing 30.3
percent toward total first -hit vegetation cover. Of this, smooth brome contributed 27.2 percent.
Native shrubs contributed 9.0 percent toward total first -hit vegetation cover (relatively 20.5
percent of vegetation total cover). Of this, big sagebrush contributed the most at 8.7 percent. A
total of twelve species of native perennial forbs were observed in the reference area samples.
Total average vegetation cover for first hits was 43.0 percent (Table 15). Cover by standing dead,
litter, bare soil and rock averaged 1.9, 34.7, 20.3 and 0.1 percent respectively. Average species
density was 21.7 species per 100 sq. m.
Production
• (Table 16)
Herbaceous biomass production averaged 1183.0 pounds oven -dry per acre in the reference
area (Table 16).
SAGEBRUSH REFERENCE AREA
(Photographs 52 -56)
Cover
(Table 13)
Native shrubs was the predominant lifeform observed in the Sagebrush Reference Area,
contributing 26.5 percent toward total first -hit vegetation cover. Of this, big sagebrush contributed
12.2 percent and mountain snowberry contributed 12.2 percent. Native perennial cool season
grasses contributed 19.5 percent toward total first -hit vegetation cover.
