Colowyo C-1981-019
18 May 10
Pg 2/7
- With the construction of the South Taylor Haul Road the majority of Haul Road A has
been removed from use for the mining operations. Portions of this road remain open
for access to the north side of the final cut of the Section 16 Pit and the East Pit.
Colowyo was working on clearing and stabilizing this road at the time of the
inspection. This portion of the road will be used to walk the 103 dragline to the top of
the West Pit late this spring or early this summer.
- The Sturgeon road was a bit dry and in overall good condition and stable. The
gravel surface remains in place and the Missouri crossings appear to be working as
designed. The roadside ditches were all clean at the time of the inspection.
- The access road in Taylor Draw was wet and muddy in spots but it was in overall
good condition. There was some minor rutting on the road but this is not a problem
at this time. The road was open the entire way to the West Taylor Pond.
Hydrologic Balance: - The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) was full (the water was
approximately 18" from the top of the riser) and discharging through the weep hole
at the time of the inspection. There was no inflow from the ditch along the north side
of the Streeter Fill. The discharge into Goodspring Creek looked clear. The pond
embankment was well vegetated and stable at the time of the inspection and no
erosional problems were noted. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) contained water approximately five feet below
that top of the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection.
The pond embankment was well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems
were noted. The emergency spillway is a riprapped, open channel, which was
stable. Colowyo is planning on cleaning this pond in the summer. **See pictures at
the end of this report.**
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained water approximately six feet below the
top of the discharge pipe and was discharging through the weep hole on the riser
(the water was approximately half-way up the weep hole). There was no water
flowing into the pond from the Prospect watershed. The discharge looked clear but
the water in the pond looked dirty. There was a small amount of sediment at the
inlet of the pond, but there did not appear to be as much sediment as in previous
years (this was verified by the condition of the reclamation in the East Pit, as
discussed below in "revegetation/reclamation success"). The pond embankment
was well vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted. **See
pictures at the end of this report.**
- The Section 28 Pond (NPDES 012A) was muddy and contained a very small amount
of water at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was fairly well
vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted at the time of the
inspection. During last year's growing season it was noted that there were several
bare spots in the vegetation on the embankment. Based on this assessment,
Colowyo reseeded portions of the Section 28 Pond embankment in the fall of 2009.
There was some new growth beginning to emerge in the areas where the bare spots
were noted. The vegetative growth on this embankment will continue to be
monitored. **See pictures at the end of this report.**
