King II East and West Diversion Ditches—The clear water ditches on either side of the surface
facilities area appeared in good condition. The west ditch is triangular in cross-section and is lined
with rock riprap. The east ditch is a shallow, wide-bottomed trapezoidal ditch that has grass-lining
starting to develop.
Backfill and Grading
Demolition of structures in the King I portal areas has begun, although there was no activity during the
inspection. The King I portals were sealed in 2009.
Support Facilities
King I—There was no activity at King I other than at the office and bathhouse.
King II—Earthwork for the surface facilities area of this new mine began in March 2007. All of the
surface earthwork(roads, ditches, etc.)has been completed. Buildings in the office/bathhouse
/warehouse area remain under construction. Four portals have been developed at King 11. Coal was
being trucked off-site.
General Mine Plan Compliance
The operator appeared to be in compliance with the mine plan.
Subsidence
No subsidence was evident in the portal areas of King 11.
Development Waste
Several piles of coal waste rock were on the top of the waste pile, awaiting incorporation into lifts.
The top surface of the pile was dry and gently slopes away from the face of the pile. The face of the
pile was seeded and mulched last fall, but little seed germination was evident, yet. The 100-year rock-
lined diversion ditch on the east side of the pile has been extended farther up the drainage. No
problems were apparent on the pile.
4
