This TR is requested to landfill "Distressed Coal" inside the permitted mine area in the
quarry. The coal originated in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming. The coal contains inert rock
of various sizes. In 2009 Holcim screened the material to separate the rock and coal for use in
Holcim's kiln. Holcim is requesting to landfill the screened reject product in the quarry. The
estimated volume of the reject material is 20,000 tons.
The reject material will be hauled to the quarry by dump trucks. The material will be placed in 2
foot lifts, spread using a D9R Dozer and stabilized to a 3:1 slope. After the haulage is completed
the landfilled area will be covered with topsoil and seeded with native grasses consistent with
Holcim's reclamation seeding plan.
Figure 1 shows the location the material will be landfilled and the materials current location at the
plant. The landfilled area will not affect the approved reclamation plan for the quarry since the
landfill is outside of the current mine area. The rejected material consists of rock and stone with
approximately 35% coal. The material will not release any pollutants to the groundwater nor will it
affect the surface drainage system in the area.
Plate 2: Wider view of screened reject
Plate 1: Close-up view of screened reject
