Cotter Corporation PROCEDURE Number: 3-4
Schwartzwalder Mine Page: 5 of 7
Golden, Colorado WATER MONITORING Revision: 7
Date: 04/15/2010
Schwartzwalder Water Sampling Program
Surface water sampling at the Schwartzwalder Mine is carried out on a monthly schedule.
Groundwater sampling is conducted on a quarterly basis. Quarterly samples are also collected from mine
refill water, when weather and access conditions allow (snow/freezing conditions in winter can prevent
mine pool sampling). Three different analytical strategies are required for the samples, each strategy is
detailed below.
SURFACE WATER
• Six sampling locations (excluding the VhVTP discharge point as this is no longer operational).
• Four locations have a limited analytical suite. Two locations have an extended suite. The
locations for which the extended suite is requested changes each month.
• The limited analytical suite calls for dissolved and suspended U and Ra 226. Sample size is 3
liters that is filtered and acidified.
• The extended analytical suite calls for 29 parameters, listed below. Minimum sample size is 1
gallon filtered and acidified, 1 liter raw and acidified, and 1 liter raw. Samples collected during
the last month of each quarter are analyzed for both dissolved and suspended U and Ra 226.
• MAJOR IONS LDL
Alkalinity, Total as CaCO3 1.0 mg/L Calcium
Bicarbonate as HCO3 1.0 mg/L Magnesium
Chloride 3.0 mg/L Potassium
Sulfate 5.0 mg/L Sodium
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES LDL
Total Dissolved Solids 10 mg/L
METALS TOTAL LDL
Aluminum 0.20 mg/L
Antimony 0.001 mg/L
Arsenic 0.10 mg/L
Copper 0.005 mg/L
Lead 0.005 mg/L
Manganese 0.01 mg/L
Mercury 0.0001 mg/L
Silver 0.001 mg/L
Iron 0.03 mg/L
Thallium 0.001 mg/L
Zinc 0.005 mg/L
RADIONUCLIDES DISSOLVED LDL
Radium 226 0.2 pCi/L
METALS DISSOLVED
Aluminum
Antimony
Copper
Iron
Manganese
Molybdenum
Thallium
Uranium
0.10 mg/L
0.10 mg/L
0.10 mg/L
0.10 mg/L
LDL
0.20 mg/L
0.001 mg/L
0.005 mg/L
0.03 mg/L
0.01 mg/L
0.005 mg/L
0.001 mg/L
0.0002 mg/L
0
