the inspection. The discharge was clear and estimated at about 30 gallons per minute. The
EC of the discharge was measured at 2300 umhos/cm. The water in the Purgatoire River
immediately above the discharge point prior to mixing was measured at 300 umhos/cm.
Processing Waste
Both the processing waste pile (RDA) and the development waste pile (DWP) were traversed
on foot. The development waste pile is fully reclaimed and revegetated. Ditches divert most
of the runoff from the DWP to Pond 4 with the exception of the lower southern slope, which
is diverted under the mine access road on its way to Pond 7. All ditches and culverts were
found in good condition. Water is diverted from above the RDA by a clean water diversion
sized for a 100 year, 24-hour storm event. This ditch was found in excellent condition, as
shown below.
s
Terrace benches divert flow from the reclaimed face of the RDA to riprap downdrains that
flank the reclaimed slope. All terraces appeared to have good negative grade back into the
slope and proper grade to divert flow to the side downdrains. Vegetation remains mostly
dormant on the face with only minor green-up at this time. Wind-blown refuse fines were
noted near the top of the terrace bench. The operator may need to consider some mitigative
techniques to prevent the build-up of wind-blown refuse fines onto the reclaimed face.
5
