Colowyo C-1981-019
.24 Mar 10
Pg 3/6
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - The Streeter Pond (NPDES 001 A) contained water
approximately two feet below the top of the discharge pipe and was discharging
through the weep hole. The discharge was clear at the time of the inspection. The
pond embankment had a small amount of snow but was well vegetated and stable
and no erosional problems were noted. The emergency spillway is a riprapped,
open channel. The emergency spillway was stable at the time of the inspection.
- The Gulch A Pond (NPDES 004A) contained a small amount of water but was not
discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was covered with
a small amount of snow but was well vegetated and stable. No erosional problems
were noted on the embankment.
- The Prospect Pond (NPDES 007A) contained water approximately six feet below the
top of the discharge pipe and was discharging through the weep hole. The
discharge was clear at the time of the inspection. There was no sediment at the inlet
of the pond from the runoff the mine has experienced to date. The pond
embankment had a small amount of snow but was well vegetated and stable and
no erosional problems were noted.
- The Work Area Pond (NPDES 002A) contained water approximately two feet below
the top of the discharge pipe and was not discharging at the time of the inspection.
There is a large amount of sediment at the inlet of the pond that Colowyo should
clean out this summer. The pond embankment was covered with a small amount of
snow but it was well vegetated and stable. No erosional problems were noted on
the embankment.
The Wash Bay Pond (not an NPDES discharge point) contained water approximately
five feet below the top of the embankment and was not discharging at the time of
the inspection. This is a total containment pond and any discharge into the Work
Area Pond triggers a requirement for BTEX testing. The pond embankment was
covered with a small amount of snow but was well vegetated and stable, with no
erosional problems noted. The series of sumps in the facilities area leading into the
Wash Bay Pond were all stable at the time of the inspection.
- Culvert B is a 48" culvert. The culvert was clean.
- Culvert M is a 36" culvert with a required opening of 24". The culvert contained
sediment and ice but maintained its 24" required opening. ','-'olowyo should clean
the culvert and the sump in front of the culvert to maintain the required opening.
- Culvert K is a 30" culvert with a required opening of 24". This culvert contained
sediment and ice and had an opening right at 24". Colowyo will need to clean this
culvert ASAP, as any additional sediment or ice in this culvert will restrict the opening
to less than the required diameter. Colowyo should also clean the sump in front of
the culvert.
- Culverts H and J are both 30" culverts with required openings of 20". Both culverts
were clean.
- The newly constructed portion of the Taylor Tributary Ditch was observed from
above along the West Pit reclamation. The ditch was not carrying any water and
appeared to remain stable at the time of the inspection.
