Wildcat Mining Corporation Page 14
The Idaho mine was acquired in 1933 by the La Plata Mountains Gold Mines
Company. In 1936, a small pilot mill was erected and operated successfully for
several years.
At the time of McCausland's 1941 report on the May Day mine, there were over
25,000 feet of development work, including a vertical shaft of 565 feet, an
inclined shaft to the same depth, raises and winzes connecting the different
levels, four long tunnels, several thousand feet of crosscuts and drifts, and
numerous surface cuts and shafts.
All mining ceased in October 1942 with War Production Board Limitation Order L-
208, which classified gold production as non - essential and directed all but the
smallest of gold mines to shut down so their labor force could be used elsewhere
to support the war effort.
The mines sat idle until the early 1960's, when the May Day mine was again
leased to the Ferris Brothers, who opened the #1, #2 and #3 levels and
completed both surface and underground exploration drilling. They mined a bit of
ore but had quit by the mid- 1970's.
In the mid- 1980's, Mr. Alistair Martin purchased the Idaho property and leased
the May Day property. His Great Guennol Gold Mining Company completed
several development and limited mining campaigns between 1978 and 1987. All
. of the mined ore was milled away from site. Mr. John Ferguson managed mining
operations; Mr. Fred Johnson was the mine geologist. Notably, some 1200 tons
of the ore mined during this period remain stockpiled on the property and
available for immediate processing.
Following the Martin years, Shalako International picked up the property and kept
all of the permits active, but did not complete any significant work.
Wildcat Mining purchased the Idaho mine property and entered into a mining
lease on the May Day mine property in 2006.
Interestingly, the May Day mine property is still owned by the heirs of Mr. A.E.
Reynolds, the man who purchased the initial discovery claim and opened the
May Day mine in 1903.
Historical documentation
For having been explored, developed and mined for more than a century, the
May Day and Idaho mines have surprisingly few records. Following is a
summary of the more important archival documents.
Geologist George H. Garrey prepared a report for the May Day Gold Mining
Company dated October 1928. In this report, he records that he had mapped the
January 2007 May Day — Idaho Mine Colorado
