(19) Disposal of mine tailing and sludges in mine
This section also refers to detention pond sedimentation and ore pile areas.
Please note that ore storage areas must either be lined or have natural
impervious layers underneath to prevent migration of hazardous constituents. A
description of the proposed method of disposal of all possible contaminated
materials should be in this section. All reclaimed areas must meet the following
criteria:
The concentration of radium-226 or radium-228 in soil may not exceed the
background level by more than 5 picocuries per gram (pCi/g) or 0.185
becquerels per gram (Bq/g), averaged over the first 15 centimeters (cm) of
soil below the surface; and
The concentration of natural uranium in soil, with no radioactive decay
products present may not exceed the background level by more than 30
pCi/g or 1.11 Bq/g, averaged over the top 15 cm of soil below the surface;
and 150 pCi/g or 5.55 Bq/g, average concentration at depths greater than
15 cm below the surface, so that no individual member of the public will
receive an effective dose equivalent in excess of 100 mrem per year or 1
millisievert (mSv) per year.
A radiological survey is included as part of the site assessment. Extensive
information is provided in regard to proposed drill areas. However,
information for the portal and dump areas is insufficient. This is where the
greatest potential for environmental impact is however and the primary focus
for reclamation. Please provide a grid survey and map of the 2.26 acres for
the mine disturbance area. Provide a mean average from the data collected
for background radiation for drill areas and the mine area as this will establish
baseline for reclamation compliance.
The DRMS will require test results demonstrating that these limits have not been exceeded; the
tests are to be conducted during or immediately following the reclamation of the mud pits. If
these limits are exceeded, DRMS may require appropriate offsite disposal of mud pit contents.
Rule 6.5: Geotechnical Stability Exhibit:
(1) Please clarify that the applicant has reviewed the requirements of this section.
(2) The stability analysis of waste pile slopes is adequate.
(3) Please clarify that the applicant has reviewed the requirements of this section.
(4) Please address the affects of blasting to off-site areas.
