Martin
Executive Director
The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety has finished its review of the 2009
Annual Hydrology Report for the Bear No. 3 Mine. The following are the Division's remarks and
adequacy review comments.
Surface Water Monitorin;
The upstream and downstream surface water monitoring stations on the North Fork of the
Gunnison River were sampled at the required frequency and for the required parameters. The
results of the semi-annual field and laboratory analyses, as well as the annual full suite analyses,
show that the mine has not had a significant negative impact on the river.
The results of the hillside spring water and the hillside spring water treatment pond sampling
show that the treatment pond was reducing iron concentrations in the spring water and that iron
concentrations were in compliance even before treatment. TSS values also were in compliance,
but generally increased after flowing through the treatment pond. There was no apparent trend
with TDS values before and after pond treatment. All of the WET testing of the hillside spring
water and the discharge from the hillside spring water treatment pond passed. There were no
discharges through the sediment pond during the year.
Ground Water Monitorin
The quarterly field sampling and the annual full suite analyses were performed as required for
alluvial wells AA-1 and AA-3. The required parameter lists were also followed. The field
parameters and full suite lab analyses results were in line with values that had been obtained in
the last few years.
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver • Grand Junction Durango Active and Inactive Mines
