2009 Climax Mine Reclamation Report
Overview
The following document outlines all reclamation activities conducted at the Climax Mine in
2009. Reclamation activities were conducted by Habitat Management, Inc., Habitat
Construction, LLC., Slater Seeding, and Climax personnel. A summary of reclamation areas and
materials is included in Table 1. Maps of all 2009 reclamation areas are also attached (Maps 1-
3).
Biosolids Management
Biosolids production at the Climax Mine is conducted by Parker Ag Services. Raw biosolids and
woodchips are delivered to the site where they are composted together to produce Class A
biosolids for reclamation purposes.
In 2009, a small amount of composted biosolids (600 cubic yards) was hauled and placed on the
crest of 3 Dam for final reclamation. An additional 5,500 cubic yards of compost were
stockpiled in the northwest corner of Robinson Tailings Pond for use in 2010 reclamation.
Stockpiling the already composted biosolids created room for additional biosolids production
through the winter months.
In November 2009, the biosolids production pad was inspected and prepared for winter
operations. An annual meeting was held between Climax, Parker Ag, and Habitat Management
to foster communication and ensure each party's needs are being met.
New Reclamation
I Dam
The Robinson Lake Cleanout Project in 2008 generated a large quantity of topsoil which was
placed on the crest of 1 Dam. In 2009, the topsoil was pushed down the face of the dam to cover
the existing acid rock cap on the dam. This 36.10 acre area was then broadcast seeded.
Additional topsoil removed from Robinson Lake in 2009 was also placed on 1 Dam and seeded.
In total 37.66 acres were reclaimed on the face of 1 Dam in 2009 (Table 1). This reclamation is
shown on Map 2 of 3.
McNult-v Curve
The steep slope below Highway 91 at the McNulty Curve was regraded in 2008 to improve slope
stability and provide a base for a new tailings delivery line. The 3.77 acre slope was
hydromulched and seeded in 2009 (Table 1). The hydromulch was applied with the addition of
1000 lbs/acre of Biosol to provide organic matter and nutrients. This reclamation is shown on
Map2of3.
Robinson Lake Utilities
Two new roads were constructed in and adjacent to Robinson Lake to provide access to utility
poles in 2009. Both the uphill and downhill slope of each of these roads was hydromulched and
seeded in 2009. The hydromulch was applied with the addition of 1000 lbs/acre of Biosol to
provide organic matter and nutrients. This project included 1.1 acres of reclamation and is shown
on Map 2 of 3.
Habitat Management, Inc. 1 December 2009
