February 15, 2010
Mr. Mac Shafer
Castle Concrete Co.
PO Box 2379
Colorado Springs, CO. 80901
RE: Blasting at the Pikeview Quarry to accelerate geological failure
Dear Mac,
Please make reference to the above and to our phone conversations concerning this proposed blasting.
The idea of placing explosive charges in the scarps that are deep enough to affect the rock mass came to
us during our meeting with Mr. Tom Terry of CTL Thompson. His calculations show that a relatively
small amount of explosive energy could possibly cause a failure at the interface of the moving mass of
rock and the stable rock structure beneath it.
The plan is fairly simple and will in no way cause any adverse environmental impact to the surrounding
homes. The scarps that are suitable for the lowering of explosives into them are few and consequently,
the amount of explosives to be used will be no greater than 1401bs per 8ms delay, with a total amount of
explosives used being less than 350 lbs.
The approximate locations of the scarps that were found during my recent survey of the area are marked
with the yellow arrows in the picture above. These scarps are approximately 20 to 30 feet in depth and 4
to 7 feet in width.
The explosives to be used are a packaged emulsion explosive and each package is 5 inches in diameter
and weighs 35 pounds.
A 3/4 lb booster will be placed in each package with a 60 ft. non-electric detonator securely attached. Each
package will be lowered into the crevice with a ``/z" rope.
