Spot and area spraying were conducted for noxious weed infestations in 2009 as part of an ongoing weed
control program. Spraying was completed by BTUEC Mine Environmental Staff, and Peabody
reclamation personnel. Primary targeted weed species included Russian knapweed, hoary cress (white-
top), Canadian thistle, and tamarisk. Selective herbicide applications utilized 2,4-D, Tordon, Escort, and
triclopyr (tamarisk). Spraying was conducted from June through October, and covered a total of
approximately 151.6 acres.
Areas treated included, but were not limited to:
- Roadsides (main entry road, all roads on the plateau area south and west of the road leading to
the 7-North Angle Well, and portions of the main entry roads in both the east and west mine
facilities areas)
- A large area between the Old Highway and Highway 13
- A large area north of the 7-North Angle Well
- Refuse Pile area
- No. 9 Mine Shop area
- Areas in and surrounding the west Mine Facilities area (i.e. Water Treatment Ponds,
Office/Warehouse, Bathhouse, Coal Handling Facilities, Railroad Spur, Wastewater Treatment
areas, and yard areas)
- The open meadow to the north of the reclaimed Mine No. 4 portals
Limited tamarisk control efforts focused on an area south and east of the end of the rail-spur.
Due to seasonal wet conditions and equipment issues, planned haying activities did not occur during
2009. BTUEC continues to work with a local rancher to contract agricultural cropping activities for
restoration of several disturbed areas where low cover values and weed/rodent infestations have been a
concern.
Attached are copies of the standard form (CDRMS) Annual Reclamation Report for 2009. In reviewing
and updating this form, I identified errors in the numbers for reclamation acreages and acreages associated
with long-term facilities. I have corrected this error for the 2007-2009 forms, and am enclosing copies of
the corrected forms for your files. If you have any questions or require further information, please feel
free to contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely,
For BTU Empi pany, LLC
i? :ill a
Jerry M. t ton
Enviro tal Manager
f ile:G: \Environmentol\Empire\ARR\BTUEC Annual Recl.
