COMPARATIVE RISK OF QUARRYING
Quarrying stone by underground methods is not considered to be an excessively risky
industrial occupation. In the context of other mining activities, it is significantly less
hazardous than other types of underground mining. This is primarily because there is
little to no use of explosives in dimensional stone quarrying operations. The following
table presents some recent statistics for injuries and fatalities associated with several
types of mining.
UNDERGROUND MINE AND QUARRY SAFETY STATISTICS
Coal Metals Non-Metals .Stone
Fatalities 39 6 1 0
Fatalities per 200,000 hrs 0.05 0.07 0.03 0
Injuries 2640 450 164 47
Injuries per 200,000 hrs 3.44 5.57 4.17 2.59
Days Lost 9445 513 179 97
Days Lost per 200,000 hrs 12.32 6.35 4.55 5.35
PUBLIC SAFETY NF-AR THE QUARRY
It is the plan of Colorado Stone Quarries, Inc. to allow reasonable access by the
general public to the vicinity of the quarry for viewing of the operations and for access to
the nearby public lands. Physical controls such as fences and signs directed to the public
regarding safe routes and hazards will be in place on company controlled property.
Colorado Stone Quarries, Inc. will cooperate with Gunnison County so that the County
can place fences and signs regarding safe routes and hazards on the public access road
and trail to the quarry. Warning signs will state the risk of visiting the quarry area and
using the access road to the quarry. It is the policy of Colorado Stone Quarries, Inc. to
allow such public use on and near the quarry so long as it can be conducted safely. As
time passes and experience is gained, adjustments will be made to the site use plan to
maximize the public safety and still provide for a safe and efficient marble quarrying
operation.
18
