EXHIBIT B - Site Description
(a) Soils and vegetation:
The 8.20 acre site is located in southeastern Moffat County, Colorado in the nominal S/2
of the NE/4 of Section 6, T6N R90W. Average annual precipitation in the area ranges
from 12 to 16 inches. All of the soil within the proposed permit area, as mapped and
described by the U.S.D.A. Soil Conservation Service in this area of Moffat County,
consists of soils belonging to the Lander Series (Map Unit # 118) - Lander Loam, 0 -
3 % slopes. The soils at the site are somewhat poorly drained, forming on floodplains
with mixed alluvium. This soil has moderate water holding capacity and soil depth is
deep and grades to an extremely gravelly sand at 55 to 60 inches. Permeability is
moderately slow and runoff is medium. The proposed mine site is an 8.2 acre field that has
for the last 50 years, produced hay and is an agricultural property. There are no trees, man
made structures, utilities, irrigation ditches, public roads, bridges, wells or pipelines, only a
perimeter fence surrounding the site.
A representative typical soil profile consists of a surface layer of (0-10")
loam; then (10-44") stratified fine sandy loam to clay loam, underlain (44-
55") by a fine sand and that underlain (55-60") by extremely gravelly sand.
The target aggregate materials consist of very gravelly sand; 50% gravel and
10% cobbles. This deposit extends from an approximate five to fifteen feet
below ground level.
As noted above: The proposed mine site is an 8.2 acre field that has for the last
50 years, produced hay and is a general agricultural property. There are no trees
or other native vegetation at the site. The area will be reclaimed as a small
pond and for general agriculture. DRM&S recommended planting
recommendations and a seed mix consisting of the following: Bluebunch
Wheatgrass, Western Wheatgrass, Crested Wheatgrass and Indian Ricegrass
will be use for Concurrent Reclamation activities.
The upper 10 to 12 inches of loam topsoil will be removed and stockpiled
followed by overburden removal down to approximately 5 to 6 feet BGL to
the top of the aggregate deposit. After aggregate is mined, the overburden
will be placed at the base of the excavated area in compacted lifts and topsoil
will be placed over the top at a depth of 6 inches over greater. This
reclamation will be concurrent as mine activities progress from the nominal
west to east side of the proposed site areas.
Topsoil from the equipment/operations area and from any temporary product
or topsoil stockpile area will be stripped and reserved for site reclamation and
stockpiled in the 30 foot wide buffer areas along top edges of the excavation
area.
