August 2002 -20- 003 -2203
4.0 EARTHWORK CQA TESTING AND MONITORING
The following sections summarize results of the earthwork CQA testing and monitoring
performed by Golder for the Phase Wa Area.
Golder conducted CQA testing of earth materials used for construction. Golder performed
CQA testing of in -place materials used for construction of the Phase Wa Area. Table 4
presents specified and observed CQA testing frequencies. Figure 1 shows the coordinate
system used to locate tests.
In accordance with the Golder CQA Plan, when a Golder monitor observed deficiencies, the
monitor determined the nature and extent of the problem and notified Ames and/or CC &V.
When unsatisfactory test results identified a deficiency, Golder performed additional tests to
define the extent of the deficient area. Ames corrected deficiencies to meet the requirements of
the specifications, and Golder retested and/or approved the corrected deficiency prior to any
additional related work. The following sections include discussions of the deficiencies
encountered.
4.1 Results of Laboratory Soils Testing
Golder performed laboratory testing of soils during all aspects of the Phase Wa construction.
Golder's soils laboratory in Lakewood, Colorado performed permeability and bulk specific
gravity testing of SLF. All other testing was performed on -site. To verify that the earth
materials used during construction met project specifications, Golder performed the following
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) tests:
• Rock corrected density values (ASTM D4718);
• Grain size distribution (ASTM D 1140 for material finer than the No. 200
sieve, and ASTM C 117 and C 136 for coarse material);
0
[:% 0012203W40d1Cen "802=32203.0400.04740w.doe.
