CMA
December 2, 2009
`i Page 2 of 4
Technology Transfer Team Applied Sciences Program. Partial and/or in-kind funding was also
provided by the participating agencies and SCC.
The studies have contributed valuable information regarding planting approaches, control of
competing vegetation, use of elk proof fencing and thick soil planting sites. Successful
techniques identified in the studies have been incorporated into the standard reclamation
practices at the Seneca Mines.
Seneca. Coal Company deserves recognition for their cooperation in reclamation research efforts
and for their willingness to apply successful research results to on-the-ground reclamation at
their mine sites.
Excellence in Reclamation
Bowie Resources, LLC - Bowie Mine No
Bowie Resources, LLC
P.O. Box 1488
Paonia,, Colorado 81428
Contact: Mr. Basil Bear
970- 929-5258
Bowie Resources, LLC is nominated for their exemplary backfilling and grading at the Bowie No. 1
East Mine. Transforming a series of cut and fill benches into a natural topography that blends into the
surrounding hillside, BRLLC worked closely with their contractor, Con-sy Inc. on this project.
Fill material stored on a lower storage pad was hauled uphill while carefully monitoring material
balances to create a stable topography. After topsoiling, final slopes were roughened using an
excavator bucket to minimize erosion. Permanent drainages were re-established and riprapped to
blend in with the natural drainage system. The reclaimed areas have passed the test of spring
snowmelt and summer thunderstorms alike.
For their conscientious and exemplary efforts in completing this project, Bowie Resources LLC
deserves to be recognized.
Excellence in Reclamation - Honorable Mention
Mountain Coal Company L.L.C. - West Elk Mine
P.O.
