CMA
December 2, 2009
Mountain Coal Company is nominated for their relocation of a steep section of a U. S. Forest
Service road at the West Elk Mine. The relocated road improves access to remote lands for the
mine and will provide improved public access to Forest Service lands in the future after mining
is complete.
Reclamation of the abandoned portion of the road included the innovative use of on-site
materials. Large boulders were placed on the reclaimed land in order to block vehicular access
and for helping the area blend with surrounding lands. Aspen trees that had been cut down were
laid across the reclaimed road as an additional erosion control measure on the steep slope and for
restricting access by motor vehicles. During construction of the new segment of road, the road's
alignment was modified in order to avoid a hawk's nest.
Mountain Coal Company is to be commended for their road reconstruction and innovative use of
on-site materials.
Excellence in Reclamation - Honorable Mention
Colowyo Coal Company, L.P.
5731 State Highway 13
Meeker, CO 81641
Contact.: Tay Tonozzi
970-824-1579
The Colowyo Mine is nominated for their innovative reclamation practice of using a dragline for
the backfilling and grading operations in the North Taylor area of their West Pit. With the use of
their 102 dragline, Colowyo moved more than 1 million yards of spoil in less than two months.
The dragline efficiently moved large quantities of spoil great distances and placed the material
where it was needed to achieve final topography. Only minimal assistance from a bulldozer was
required for final grading activities once the spoil was put in place by the dragline.
Colowyo Coal Company is to be commended for their innovative use of the dragline for
backfilling and grading mined lands.
Excellence in Achieving Final Reclamation and Phase 3 Bond Release
MINREC, Inc.
2352 N 7th Street, Ste.
