January 15, 200
FLAC (Version 5.00)
¦
¦
¦
Page 3?
Figure 19. Contours of N'elocity at Equilibrium for 1.311: IN' Slope Angle and 30-ft-high
Pile Under Saturated Residual Strength Condition for Q-Floor Mudstone
Bedding Dipping at ?5° (Note: velocities less than 10" fps are considered
negligible and in equilibrium)
4.5 Spoil Pile Recommendations
It is recommended that spoil pile be constructed so as not to exceed a maximum fill
heiuht of 68 ft above the toe and that the spoil pile slope face not exceed a 1.3 horizontal-to-
vertical ratio in areas where the average bedding slope is about 13°. This recommendation is
thought to be conservative. especially during dry periods, because a low strength for the Q-Floor
mudstone was assumed and no cohesion was assumed for the spoils.
There are uncertainties in this analysis that need to be considered when implementing
these design recommendations, especially regarding bedding dip compared to bedding strength,
and groundwater efftects. The analysis assumed the strength of the Q-Floor bedding was 0l = 15°
softening to 5° at residual. The 13° bedding dip represents an average, but there are locations
within K-Pit where the beds are more steeply dipping (up to 15°). If the beds dip more steeply
than the frictional strength of the beds then the spoils will be unstable, creeping or sliding down
hill. In such areas, there are two design alternatives:
Agapito Associates, Inc.
