Junuurv 15, 2008
FLOC (fersion 5.00)
¦
¦
¦
Page 31
Figure 18. Contours of Velocity at Equilibrium for 13HAV Slope Angle and 68-ft-high
Pile Under Saturated Residual Strength Condition for Q-Floor Mudstone
Bedding Dipping at 13° (Note: velocities less than 10-5 fps are considered
negligible and in equilibrium)
For the case when the bedding is more steeply dipping. 68 11 of spoil is unstable. The
spoil needs to have improved properties. This was examined by case 95 where the bedding dip
was increased to 25° and compaction was assumed for the spoils. The 25° is beyond the
maximum bedding dip but the analysis provides an upper-bound limit to stability. Case #5c
indicates that a 30 11 high spoil pile is at the limit ofequilibrium when the spoils have a strength
of' 50 psf cohesion and friction is reduced to 38° (no cohesion reduction was assumed). The
predicted failure mode was again determined from high velocities and shear strain increments.
Contours of velocity. shown in Figure 19. show the unstable volume. The 38° friction and 50 psf
cohesion used for this limit ofequilibrium condition was compared to the assumed spoil strength
of 40° friction and and 50 psf cohesion to compute the safety factor of FOS = 1.07 using
f:.quation 8.
Agapito Associates.
