Offsite Support Facilities
Two ventilation shafts exist within the permit area but are located in Apache Canyon to the
southeast of the facility area. The upper shaft (below left) has been opened and capped with
a grate. The location is surrounded by chain link fencing and an access gate was found
locked. The lower shaft (below right) has not been re- opened at this time. Both of these
small disturbed areas require disturbed area markers in accordance with Rule 4.02.3. Since
a public road is adjacent or bisects each of these two locations (Bosque del Oso State
Wildlife Area access road) each location should include mine identification signage as
required by Rule 4.02.2. Please establish these signs as soon as possible.
Revegetation
The first completed lift of the Refuse Disposal Area was revegetated in 1988. The refuse
area post- mining land use is wildlife habitat - upland, requiring the use of a rangeland seed
mix and shrub transplants. Approved shrubs are true mountain mahogany, common
snowberry, skunk brush sumac, ponderosa pine, Pinon pine, and Juniper. Shrubs observed
(below) include pinon
pine, juniper, mountain
mahogany, and
common snow berry.
Some of these shrubs
are 6 -8 feet in height
and appear vigorous
and healthy.
Overall, the site
appeared in
compliance with the
Rules and the
approved permit
application.
