_ USDA - SCS Recommendations for Species to be
• Used for Permanently Revegetating Rangelands
As described in Section 2.3, three range sites occur on the proposed permit area,
i.e. the mountain shrub high and low elevation sites (range sites A and B) and
the sage-grass site (range site C). The mountain shrub sites generally occur on
the upper slopes of the west portion and on most of the east portion of the pro-
posed permit area. The sage-grass type is the most common type in the west por-
tion, giving way to mountain shrub as one progresses east or towards the crest of
the Williams Fork Mountains (refer to Map M16). This same distribution of types
will be approximately reiterated by Trapper Mine's revegetation plan.
The USDA Soil Conservation Service (1977) has described the climatic zones of
Moffat County for purposes of selecting plant species for improving and reclaim-
ing rangelands. Figure 3.6-5 shows the climatic zones described and the relative
location of the proposed mine plan area. Three separate climatic zones occur
across the area (Zones III, VII and VIII). Some error occurs in the map because
of the scale but Zone VII roughly corresponds with the sage-grass range site,
• Zone III represents the low elevation mountain shrub site while Zone VIII is an
approximation of the high elevation mountain shrub site. The USDA recommended
plant species for seeding rangelands in these climatic zones are provided in
Tables 3.6-4 through 3.6-6.
General Seeding and Transplanting Criteria
The rate of seeding retopsoiled, graded spoils is dependent upon the method, i.e.
drilling versus broadcasting. If seeding is to be done by broadcasting, the rate
of application will be increased by fifty percent. The following portions of
this section provide tables listing the preferred seed mix and rates.
Section 4.4 discusses the shrub reestablishment standard which will be achieved
at Trapper Mine. Shrub reestablishment is based upon selection and seeding or
planting to enhance the primary post mining land use or uses. For example, range
site C (big sagebrush-grass type) will be returned to a primary land use of
10
3-117
REVISED JUL 2 ,;
Q?
