There is a zone of gray shale above the
first mineable seam, which averages seven feet thick, that may
not be a suitable subsoil because of its low pH. This cone of
gray shale is the zone ,just above the first mineable seam.
During the mining operation the extent of acidic mate-
rial will be defined by testing the material in the pit highwall.
The overburden from each of the first five pits will be tested to
initially identify the extent of acidic material. Then samples
will be taken from every fifth pit which represents a pit advance
of 450 feet.
Pit overburden samples will be taken that represent the
vertical extent of each individual strata. For thinly bedded
strata, samples will be composited in 4-foot intervals. The
samples will be analyzed for pH, acid base potential, organic
sulfur, pyritic sulfur, sulfate sulfur and total sulfur.
• 2.05-12 July 1991
