Water Storage Pond Compacted Clay Liner
Parcel 1, S%a , SW%, Section 35, T1S, R67W
Adams County, Colorado
in such soils can be very difficult if water contents are not monitored closely. The
Contractor should be prepared to handle soils of this type, including the use of chemical
stabilization, if necessary.
Compaction areas should be kept separate, and no lift should be covered by another
until relative compaction and moisture content within the recommended ranges are
obtained.
Settlements Settlements will occur in filled ground, typically on the order of 1 to 2
percent of the fill depth. For a 10-foot fill, this corresponds to settlement on the order of
1 inch. If fill placement is performed properly and is tightly controlled, in GROUND's
experience the majority of that settlement will take place during earthwork construction.
The remaining potential settlements likely will take several months or longer, to be
realized.
Erosion Protection The temporary and permanent graded slopes will be vulnerable to
erosion both from precipitation runoff and pond wave activity. Appropriate erosion
control measures should be included in project design.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
GROUND recommends that a geotechnical engineer be retained to provide quality
assurance materials testing for the clay liner system, including the overlying
embankment fill. Project earthwork also should be observed and monitored for general
compliance with the plans and specifications as they relate to construction materials.
The geotechnical engineer should provide a written declaration stating that the project
site, including the building pad area, was filled with acceptable materials and was placed
in general accordance with the requirements outlined In this report or otherwise specified
for the project.
GROUND recommends that testing and reporting for quality assurance during
placement of the liner system to be performed by a geotechnical engineer in accordance
with the following schedule:
• Maximum Dry Density / Optimum Moisture Content Tests 1 test per 5,000 yd3 &
(ASTM D698 & D1557, the "standard" and "modified" Proctor) 1 per distinct soil type
Job No. 09-3094 GROUND Engineering Consultants, Inc.
