1.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this Bare Area Work Plan is to identify the bare ground work to be completed for
areas at the Telluride Tailing Piles 4, 5 and 6 (TT4, TT5 and TT6) and the Red Mountain Tailing
Piles 2 and 3 (RMT2 and RMT3) managed by Idarado Mining Company, located in San Miguel
and Ouray Counties, Colorado. The Revegetation Monitoring of Telluride and Red Mountain
Tailings Piles: Results from 2008 (MWH 2008) report indicated that the crest of RMT3 has low
plant cover. Additionally, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE)
in comments to the same report, characterized the top surface and west-facing slope of TT4
and an area on the north-facing slope of TT6 as having low plant cover. Idarado Mining
Company has also identified the crest of RMT2 as having low plant cover. This work plan has
been developed to address those identified areas.
The work that will be performed pursuant to this work plan includes:
• Mapping of identified bare areas
• Placement of a rock armor layer on the crests of RMT2 and RMT3
• Placement of a material cover over identified areas of TT4, TT5 and TT6
• Revegetation of covered areas on TT4, TT5 and TT6 with the RAP seed mix or
alternative seed mixture developed for wetter locations
• Revegetation of the soil borrow area, as necessary.
2.0 BARE AREA DELINEATION
The bare areas will be staked in the field, and the perimeter mapped using Global Positioning
System (GPS) technology. The purpose of the field mapping is to determine the total area for
planning, as well as the location for future monitoring.
3.0 BARE AREA REMEDIATION
3.1 RMT2 and RMT3
The bare areas on the crest of RMT2 and RMT3 will be addressed through placement of a
geotextile fabric, with rock armoring along the length of the crest, approximately 10 feet wide.
Prior to rock placement, woven geotextile fabric will be placed on the tailing surface in the area
where rock armoring will be placed to prevent movement of tailing into the rock material. The
rock armoring will be placed approximately 6 inches thick. The rock material will be sourced
from the Barstow borrow area.
July 31, 2009
