NRCS Seed Recommendations:
SPECIES VARIETY PLS PER ACRE (100%)
Western wheatgrass Arriba 16.0
little Bluestem Pastura 7.0
Galleta Viva 12.0
Blue grams Lovington 3.0
Sideoats grama Vaughn 4.0
Winterfat Add 0.5lbstacre
Yellow Sweet Clover 7.0
% OF SPECIES IN MIXTURE PLS SEEDING RATE PER
20 3.20
IS 1.05
5 0.60
30 0.90
25 1.00
--- 0.50
5 0.35
The question of REVEGETATION as being required I believe is as simple as looking at
the DRMS RULES at "6.4.5 EXHIBIT E - Reclamation Plan (2) (f)
(iv) REVEGETATION - specify types of trees, shrubs, etc., quantities, size and location;
and"
as opposed to "(ii) Seeding - specify types, mixtures, quantities, and expected time(s) of
seeding and planting;" the original permit was written following the format as shown
above. Therefore the REVEGETATION here means tress, shrubs, etc. not that seeding
will not be performed on site. To be sure grass seeding will be an integral part of the
reclamation plan. There is no intention to avoid the seeding the site with grass seed to
establish rangeland for post mining use. The applicant commits to use the approved seed
mixture. However the applicant will not plant any shrubs or tress as part of the
reclamation plan. If the applicant needs to broadcast the seed mixture for any reason the
PLS per acre will be doubled as standard procedure dictates. Drilling the grass seed will
be the method used on this mine site. The NRCS did not recommend any fertilizer in
their recommended grass-seeding plan, therefore none will be done on this site. Please
see the attached NRCS FORM CO-ECS-5 dated 12/99 for more detail.
14.)A NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL PLAN is attached with this adequacy
review reply. This plan will be effect for the life of the mine and the plan will
be monitored and specific measure will be applied as needed. Las Animas
County will be consulted on any changes concerning the weed control plan.
The plan attached to this document has been used on other permit in
Las Animas County such as the Robinson Sons Gravel Pit NO. 1 M-2008-076
And the Visconti Gravel Pit M-200-040 and has been acceptable to the county.
15.) Seedbed Preparation and Seeding
"An ideal seedbed for range or wildlife seedings: (1) is free of competitive
weeds (seeds and plants) that may prevent establishment of seeded species; (2) has a
friable structure that allows infiltration of moisture and does not puddle or
become compacted by seeding equipment or rainfall; (3) can be easily worked
to incorporate seed into the soil; (4) has a firm soil beneath the seeding depth;
and (5) contains sufficient surface mulch to prevent rapid drying. The principal
purpose of seedbed preparation is to control weeds and condition the soil
for seeding. A minimum number of tillage or treatment operations are used on most
wildland sites. Access is often limited; debris, rock, or terrain limit the
techniques that can be used. Often only one or two techniques are used to
control weeds, prepare, and seed a site." The foregoing excerpt is taken from
United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service
Rocky Mountain Research Station
General Technical Report RMRS-G TR- 136-vol. 1 September 2004
4
