MORGAN SAND AND GRAVEL, INC.
21215 HWY. 52
FORT MORGAN, CO 80701
970-867-8074
PLANT 3 MILES NORTH OF FORT MORGAN ON HIGHWAY 52
September 1, 2009
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO. 80203
RECED
EP 0 3 2009
DiviQion OT Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
tf
RE: Problems and Possible Violations Corrective Actions from Inspection by Michael
Cunningham on 7/23/2009.
Dear: Board Members
The purpose of this letter is to respond to action and plan that Morgan Sand & Gravel has
to correct the problems that happened in are pit in the month of June & July. This has
been a very rainy year we have had over 27 inches of rain in the pit. Most of the gullies
were from a storm the night of July 2. 7 inches of rain in 20 min. That is the same night
that the dam broke. Now you have some of the facts of what went on in the month before
the inspection.
1.Concrete stored on site.
The Concrete stored on site is sandstone from the floor of the pit. It was too big to run
through the crusher we had so it will be crushed within the next year.
2. Sediment is being transported of site thru gullies.
The grass where the gullies formed was 2'-3' tall should have slowed normal run off so
that the gullies would not have happened.
With 27 inches of rain 7 inches in one night that will happen, not much could have been
done to stop that. Gullies have been filled in, seeded, straw bales have been placed to
slow runoff water down.
3.Erosion exposed material.
The area Michael shows in the pictures was placed there over 25 years ago and reseeded
when it was striped. It is one of four topsoil piles that are in the pit.
