Environmental Protection Plan, Schwartzwalder Mine 12-1
J
•
r?
?J
12. WATER QUALITY MONITORING PLAN
A Water Quality Monitoring Plan for surface water and groundwater is in effect at the Schwartzwalder
Mine in compliance with License Condition 23.0 and 23.2 of RML 369-03S; Amendment 08. Table 12-1
summarizes the sampling stations and sampling frequency in surface water, while Table 12-2 lists the
active groundwater monitoring wells and sampling stations. The Monitoring Plan is also attached.
Surface water monitoring is conducted monthly at five sampling locations on Ralston Creek (Table 12-1).
Samples are analyzed for a limited analytical suite (dissolved uranium, suspended uranium and radium-
226) or for an extended analytical suite. The extended analytical suite includes 30 parameters (major ions,
physical properties, total metals, dissolved metals and dissolved radionuclides). Groundwater monitoring is
conducted quarterly at ten monitoring wells and one domestic well (Table 12-2). Samples are analyzed for
a limited analytical suite (dissolved uranium) or for an extended analytical suite. The extended analytical
suite in groundwater is the same as that used for surface water extended analysis (30 parameters, including
major ions, physical properties, total metals, dissolved metals and dissolved radionuclides). One or two
wells are sampled for the extended analytical suite each quarter. In addition, samples from the domestic
well are analyzed quarterly for the limited analytical suite (dissolved uranium, suspended uranium, and
radium-226).
Additional samples may be collected at surface water station SW-ARH (above Red Hill) and at Sump 1 and
Sump 3, although monitoring at these stations is not required under the currently approved monitoring plan.
Water samples from the sumps are typically analyzed for dissolved uranium, only. Water quality in the
flooded mine shaft is also typically sampled quarterly, and analyzed for the extended analytical suite.
Table 12-1.
