Colowyo C-1981-019
14 July 2009
Pg 414
Revegetation/Reclamation Success: There is an area in the reclaimed East Pit around
reclamation block EP50 that has a large stand of bull thistle. Ryan Pawlowski
indicated that there was a contractor on site several weeks prior conducting weed
spraying. It was unclear whether these were sprayed. Colowyo will need to check
this area and spray as necessary. Additionally, in the reclaimed areas south of this
large patch of thistle there were other various thistle plants (musk and bull, mostly)
that will need to be sprayed.
- There were several spots where the contour ditches in the reclamation in the
Prospect drainage has breached. They are in separate ditches and some of the
ditches were breached by the same small gully flowing down the slope. Colowyo will
need to inspect all of these ditches and perform repair/maintenance work as
needed. Colowyo will also need to repair some of the larger rills/gullies that are in
that area so they do not become larger.
- Several large patches of cheatgrass were observed around the prospect drainage
on the northern edge. These areas appeared to be in or around reclamation block
EP50, which was seeded in the fall of 2007. There is little evidence that these areas
have any perennial species coming in. Colowyo will need to monitor these areas
closely and may consider treating these areas with a control product, such as
Journey or Plateau, and reseed.
- There was a large stand of sisymbria, an annual mustard, on some of the newly
reclaimed areas. This is a common species on these newly reclaimed areas,
however, it should be monitored and treated as necessary.
This completes the 14 July 2009 inspection report for the Colowyo Mine.
