Sherman <br />Executive Director <br />Ronald W. Cattany <br />Division Director <br />Natural Resource Trustee <br />In response to a letter from the State Historic Preservation Officer, Edward C. Nichols, dated <br />June 16, 2009, regarding the Permit Revision No. 8 Western Mining District Expansion for the <br />Foidel Creek Mine, the Division is not sure if the associated Cultural Resource Information was <br />provided to you with the Division's letter dated May 29, 2009. 1 am including a copy of the <br />Cultural Resource Inventory for the Western Mining District proposed subsidence area prepared <br />by Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc (MAC). <br />Areas proposed to be affected by underground activities include T5N R86W, Section 17 SW V4 , <br />Section 18 S %2 , Section 19 N %2 and N %2 S `/2 , Section 20 N %2 and N %2 S `/2 , T5N R 87W, <br />Section 13 SE % , Section 22 SE '/ , Section 23 S %2 and NE '/ , Section 24 all, Section 25, NW <br />`/ , Section 26 all, Section 27 N %2 and SE % . With the exception of the ventilation fan, escape <br />shaft and power transformer pad located in T5N 87W Section 23 SW `/ (approved in TR66), no <br />new surface disturbances are currently proposed for the Western Mining District. <br />Based on maps provided by MAC, of the 36 cultural resources noted in your letter, dated June <br />16, 2009, only one site that potentially could be within the area of potential effect (APE) is <br />5RT407. Other finds were identified in the MAC report, which is included with this letter. <br />Regarding the Refuse Disposal Area Expansion, TR67, the proposed affected area will be <br />located in T5N R86W Section 32 SE '/ , Section 31 W %2 , and a very small portion of T4N <br />R86W Section 5 N %2 NW `/ . The entire proposed affected area was previously surfaced mined <br />in the late 1970's and early 1980's under the Eckman Park and Mine No. 1 permit (C1981-071). <br />This area had been previously reclaimed and bond released.
