West Elk Mine 2008 Annual Hydrology Report 34
• years 2009 and 2013. The source of this spring appears to issue from alluvium. Baseline monthly
monitoring of Deep Creek Trail Spring began in the spring of 2007 and included measuring flow,
collecting field water quality data, and collecting samples for laboratory water quality analyses
from May through October 2007 (CDRMS, 2006). Routine monitoring (3 times per year) at this
location commenced in WY 2008.
3.3 Groundwater Monitoring Program
Currently, there are 28 monitored wells in MCC's groundwater monitoring program (Table 6 and
Table 7), including the SOM-23-1-1-1 (completely obstructed in August 2006), SOM-23-H-2, SOM-
23-H-3, and SOM-23-H-4 wells that MCC re-introduced into the monitoring program in 2005.
Well SOM-23-H-1 was monitored in 2005; however, there was audible water flowing into the well
and the well casing was damaged at depths of 135 feet, 145 feet, and 190 feet. It was completely
obstructed at 243 feet (original depth was 604 feet). As a result, monitoring data collected from
SOM-23-H-1 was suspect and this well has not been monitored since 2006. The casing is
obstructed in Well SOM 23-H-2 (August 2008), so there are no water quality data for this well for
WY 2008 and it will not be possible to monitor this well in the future.
In September 2003, MCC installed five monitoring wells (Upper Dry Fork Alluvial, Lower Dry
Fork Alluvial, SOM-3E, SOM-313, and 03-11-1). Baseline data for these wells were collected from
October 2003 to September 2004 and are presented in the 2004 Annual Hydrology Report
(HydroGeo, 2005). The water quality data for the groundwater monitoring wells are summarized
in Appendix G.
The groundwater monitoring wells are divided into the following 6 categories for discussion
purposes:
o Facility Area Wells and Alluvial Wells
o Wells completed in the Barren Member above the F-seam
o Wells completed in the F-seam
o Wells completed in the E-seam
o Wells completed above the E-seam
o Wells completed in the B-seam
The locations of the groundwater monitoring wells are shown on Map 2. A summary of the
groundwater monitoring well characteristics is presented in Table 6 and a summary of the
groundwater monitoring program is presented in Table 7.
0
June 2009 HydroGeo, Inc.
