King I Ditches and Culverts- The east upland diversion ditch appeared in good condition and was
clear of debris.
King II Ditches and Culverts—DRMS is reviewing as-built designs of culverts and ditches that the
operator submitted in TR-15. The east diversion ditch appears to be constructed in alluvial material,
and the sidewalls of this ditch are near vertical in most places as it appears to have been excavated with
a dozer blade. Large rock riprap has been installed in the west diversion ditch.
Monitoring Wells- No problems were found with King I's downstream alluvial monitoring well (the
Wiltze well) and King II's downstream alluvial monitoring well (in the middle of Hay Gulch).
Processing Waste
Significant work has recently been completed on the waste pile at King I, including: placement and
compaction of lifts, regrading of the face, and construction of ditches on the east and west sides of the
pile. Rock riprap has been installed in the east ditch. The face of the pile has depressions on it for
moisture retention for promoting revegetation. Seeding of the face is planned for later this year. No
ungraded material was on top of the pile. The top of the pile was dry and gently sloped back from the
face to the ditches on either side of the pile.
Support Facilities
King I—There was no activity at King I. Fuel tanks in the surface facilities area showed no signs of
leaks or spills, and have adequate spill barriers in place. Conveyors and conveyor belts from the King I
workings have recently been placed on what appears to be pre-law refuse material, immediately up the
gulch from the refuse pile. This location is not approved for equipment storage, and the equipment
needs to be moved to the active surface facilities area, north of the refuse pile.
King II—Earthwork for the surface facilities area of this new mine began in March 2007. Most of the
surface earthwork(roads, ditches, etc.)has been completed. A crew was constructing the bathhouse.
Other structures in the office/bathhouse/warehouse area remain under construction. Four portals have
been developed at King II. Several loads of coal were hauled away in tractor-trailer rigs during the
inspection. The truck-scale area appeared to be in full operation. The several cubic yards of coaly
waste noted during the March 2009 complete inspection as needing removal were not found.
General Mine Plan Compliance
The operator appeared to be in compliance with the mine plan.
Revegetation
The operator's recent spraying of weeds throughout the King I1 site is commendable.
4
