Colowyo C-1981-019
27 May 2009
Pg 6/7
Backfilling and Grading (cont.): - The area in the East Pit that was repaired last fall (as
a result of the large rainfall in August 2008) appear to remain stable. The two large
gullies that were filled in appear to remain stable and do not show any signs of
reforming. The contour ditches that were put in place are helping to slow and direct
the water that is flowing over the area from the recent heavy rainfall. There does not
appear to be any additional rilling of the reclaimed slopes from the recent rain.
There is also some water in the sump that is in this area. The Prospect Ditch was dry
and appeared to be stable and functioning as designed. The Division would like to
remind Colowyo that the area that was regraded just above Prospect Pond at the
tie-in to the native area will need to have the topsoil replaced and will need to be
reseeded this fall.
Topsoil: - The topsoil pile north of the final East Pit that was seeded last fall has good
vegetative growth on it this spring. The pile appears to be stable and no erosional
problems were noted.
- The topsoil just below the Section 28 Pond is well vegetated and appears to be
stable. No erosional problems were noted on the pile.
General Mine Plan Compliance: - The 101 dragline is on the East Pit highwall where it
was performing reclamation.
- The 102 dragline was out of sequence and performing regrading operations in the
north west corner of the West Pit.
- The 103 dragline was removing overburden for the mid-pit area of the E-Seam in the
West Pit.
- The 114 shovel was not operating on 27 May 2009 but it was operating in a lower
drainage area of Taylor Draw in the South Taylor Pit on 28 May 2009.
- The 115 excavator was idle at the time of the inspection.
- There was a dozer cleaning coal in the South Taylor Pit box-cut area.
- The mining at the Colowyo Mine appears to be progressing as discussed and
approved in the PAP.
Air Resource Protection: - The haul roads in the East Pit, West Pit and South Taylor Pit
were all dry at the time of the inspection. There was some dust coming from the
roads but the operator was running a water truck.
Excess Spoil: - The current active dump area for the South Taylor Pit is the C-C'
underdrain area of the East Taylor fill. The overburden is coming from the overburden
in the Taylor Draw area of the box-cut. The fill has advanced to almost the crusher
bench (which will be relocated). Most of the liffs have reached their maximum
height and the remaining lift is approximately 50-feet below its maximum height. The
fill appeared to be stable at the time of the inspection. It was not known which
section of the East Taylor Fill would be used next, after this area is completed to the
extent possible.
