The presence <br />products or waste products of uranium at the mine is not expected to pose a <br /> significant risk to human health or the <br /> environment. The level of radioactivity in the <br /> development rock is similar to background levels <br /> in the area. Temporary ore stockpiles may contain <br /> higher activity than background levels, but <br /> exposure will be minimized by hauling ore off-site <br /> on a regular basis. The development rock for the <br /> ore is expected to be sandstone, and is not an acid <br /> former. BMPs, such as earth/rock berms or <br /> waterbars will be used on the downslope side of <br /> ore piles to control stormwater runoff and to <br /> reduce the effects of erosion and the potential for <br /> runoff of contaminated water. <br />Disturbed areas Dust and sediment Sediment is a potential pollutant source due to the <br /> land disturbing activities involved in the mining <br /> process. The ore and development rock is hauled <br /> from the shaft or portal area and stockpiled on the <br /> mine site with heavy equipment. The ore and <br /> development rock are also loaded and transported <br /> from the mine sites with heavy equipment. Water <br /> or other suppressants will be used as necessary to <br /> minimize dust at the site. Earth/rock berms, <br /> waterbars, temporary seeding, soil ripping, and <br /> other BMPs will be used to control sediment <br /> E <br />around these activities. <br />I) E1-,9sio1iand Sedime1,r! C9n11-aIS IPs <br />Typical erosion and sediment control BMPs at the site include, but are not limited to, the <br />following: <br />Earth/rock berms <br />Berms constructed of earth or non-ore containing rock that has been excavated during the <br />mining process will be used in various locations to trap sediment and reduce the velocity <br />of runoff from areas disturbed by mining activity. Earth/Rock berms will be constructed <br />at key runoff locations for disturbed areas. These areas include, but are not be limited to, <br />the edge of the exposed surface mine working areas above the DRA and at the toe of the <br />DRA stockpile areas. <br />Waterbars <br />A waterbar is a ridge of compacted soil, loose non-ore containing rock, or gravel <br />constructed across disturbed areas.
