There are
no known existing or former hazardous materials, hazardous waste issues, or sites located on
BLM lands in the proposed project area or immediate vicinity. Diesel fuel and gasoline at the
mine operations shop (located on private land) are stored in above-ground storage tanks located
within lined and bermed containment areas. All equipment maintenance is conducted at the
maintenance shed site. Any contaminated soil, resulting from spills, is immediately removed and
disposed of appropriately off-site. Waste oil generated at the facility is either burned in waste oil
heaters or disposed of offsite at a permitted facility. Solid waste generated at the facility is
collected and disposed of by a commercial solid waste transport company.
Environmental Consequences
Solid waste generated during project activities would be disposed of in appropriate off-site waste
collection containers. There could also be small volumes of other hazardous materials present
(e.g., ethylene glycol, oil, transmission/hydraulic fluids, etc.) used for emergency maintenance of
vehicles and equipment. Small spills or leaks of these fluids and/or vehicle fuels could occur as
part of the project activities. There would be no maintenance of mine operation vehicles within
the proposed project area. The existing mine equipment maintenance area would continue to be
operated at its current location during the mining of the area included in the Proposed Action.
Mitigation
Grandview Gravel Pit Expansion Environmental Assessment 25
